How does Student Backup know which files to back up each day? Student Backup has spent years perfecting our program to insure unattended, automated backup of your files. Our program scans your computer every day and backs up existing files, newly created files and files that have been changed or updated.
Why not just Email myself my files or use a hardware backup device? You could. But all of these alternatives would require you to remember and perform a backup EVERY DAY. With your hectic study schedule and social life, are you really going to be that disciplined? Ask yourself, “How often do I backup my files now?”
How secure and safe are my files? Your files are protected via Blowfish encryption, the highest level of encryption security available today. Only YOU will possess the encryption code needed to unlock your files. Even Student Backup will not have the ability to unlock or access your files. Our servers are stored at TWS Hosting in Islandia, New York, one of the most reliable data centers in the United States. The security of their systems insures that your files will always be available when you need them.
How do I recover my files if my computer crashes?
In the event that a disaster recovery is required, please contact recovery@studentbackup.com.

Can my computer get a virus from the server storing my files?
No, you can not get a virus from the server. Your files are stored exactly as
they are sent to Student Backup and do not interact with any other files on
Student Backup's server.
How long will a remote backup take?
Less than one hour for a complete backup and usually five minutes or less for an incremental backup.
Why are remote backups considered more beneficial?
The data is immediately stored off-site using an automated backup system.
Only an internet connection is needed, eliminating the need for expensive
backup equipment and media. Because the system is automated, no user interaction
is required.
How secure are remote backups?
Very. All files are encrypted using Blowfish encryption with their
own personal encryption code which is only known by the user of the system.
Blowfish encryption has never been broken by a hacker.
What is encryption?
Encryption is basically a mathematical formula that scrambles a data file. And the only way to unscramble it is with the encryption code.
When I installed StudentBackup, my user name appears with the number 1 as part of my user name. Why?
This occurs when another user has the same user name.
How much storage space do I have on the Backup Server for backing up my files?
You may backup up to 1GB of files under a single user account. In the event
the files being backed up by our system near the limits of your 1GB storage
limit, we will notify you via Email so that you may delete or move non-critical
files from your My Documents folder or StudentBackup.com may impose a fee.
The 1GB of capacity represents the amount
of storage you will be allotted at
our data facilities. Because your files are compressed prior to transmission
to our offsite data center, the actual amount of files on your
computer that may be backed up may be significantly greater than 1GB. In a bench test of over 100 college student computers, we found compression
ratios of 25% to over 100%, with most experiencing over 50% compression. What
this means to you is that you may be able to backup significantly more than
1GB of files, with the possibility of having 2GB of data backed under your
account.
